Thanks for inviting me
No, no problem at all. Am….the, the study we’re doing is on, ah, am people like that have hobbies that turn their hobbies into their careers.
Yeah
Ah, so in your case what has been like your biggest hobby that you turned into your career…..is?
It’s yoga.
Yoga
I love yoga, I’m passionate about yoga.
Yoga!!
Yeah!
That’s just a bit of a weird thing to turn into your career, isn’t it like……
Do you think so?
All the stretching and that kind of stuff…..
Aw it’s fantastic, I’m so privileged to be able to teach yoga and to turn something that I love into my job.
Ummm
You don’t think so?
Am…just…..ok…..no brilliant, fair play, fair play, mighty. Am, right so,…..like…..and am……when did you first start doing the yoga and what brought you to it maybe?
Ah, well I started when I was about 16 or 17, so just a few years ago. Am. I used to do it just as a hobby and I went with a friend once and it was for….for just as a hobby, and as I said, for wellbeing and keeping healthy both of the mind and of the body. So I started doing it for my own purposes and then I got the opportunity to teach other people and I thought, yeah, I’m going to do this.
Ok and am, right, Hannah what did you……how did you know you wanted to be a yoga teacher?
It’s Helen, sorry!
Oh sorry…..sorry Helen, I have this aunt, you just reminded me of this aunt who is called Hannah, excuse me, sorry
Oh right, ok. So what was the question?
Am……ah……being a teacher Hannah, how did you know you wanted to be a teacher….
It’s Helen!!
Sorry, how did you know you wanted to be a yoga teacher?
Because as I said I really love what I did. I was passionate about it and I got the opportunity to do work with people. So, am, I jumped at the chance and here I am, I’ve been doing it ever since.
Right. Can you tell me about a typical yoga then for you?
We, we start maybe with a few stretches and warm-ups and we do the sun salutation. I just check the level of people in my group to see if I have any beginners or people who have been doing it for a long time and am, yes…….we, we go through a programme and depending on who I’ve got would depend on the programme I have and am, yeah,….we, we last about an hour and yeah it’s really good.
And can I ask, did some people like ever say to you that they find the class boring or would it probably, like you know……well it’s probably mainly women doing the yoga…….am I right in saying that? So like, if any of the men that do do it, would they find it boring, like?
No. You wouldn’t be right in saying that no.
Men don’t find yoga boring?
No.
And is there men….do men actually do the class?
They do yeah.
Oh right. Would there be like an 80/20 balance?
It depends, am, I’ve got a class at the moment and I’d say we’ve got ah, there’s about 30% are men…….I mean men like to keep healthy as much as women! I mean, why, do you not think that men should be doing yoga?
No…..ah…..well I mean, I’m just surprised like, I mean ya know it’s such a……I don’t know it’s so….gentle and stretching and it ‘s nearly a feminine thing…..like really ya know?
Well that’s your opinion
Umm, ok, alright. And am, so when you are teaching yoga…..ah……like am…..how do you feel……is it…..obviously you really enjoy teaching yoga so what does it give you? What kind of feeling does it give you?
Well obviously it gives me a feeling of wellbeing. It gives a feeling of…..that feel good factor within myself. It’s great for health for the body and the mind and I love helping people. It’s a challenge, working with people, women and men!
Right, so you get a buzz out of it?
A big buzz, yes
Ok, right, a buzz from yoga! Right am, sorry now one second………………now a, where are we there…………..am, oh yeah challenges, what’s the challenges of being a yoga teacher………are there any challenges to being a yoga teacher?
Ah, well obviously working with people brings a lot of challenges…..am, in so much as you’re dealing with lots of different personalities……..
Sorry ……………..sorry……….off you go…….you were saying
Challenges with people!!
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Yes
It’s very challenging. And your favourite part of teaching yoga…..what’s the thing you enjoy most?
The fact that I am working with something that I am so passionate about
