Qualititative interviews are recorded and transcripted in order to maintain validity and accuracy of the data

INTERVIEWING AS A QUALITATIVE TOOL

Interviewing technique can be an effective tool to gather data. However, It can also be a total waste of time if not carried out correctly.

- Interview needs to have a clear purpose

- The interviewer is directly responsible for directing interaction and choosing the content

- The interview should be planned; organised; requiring sustained attention and formal arrangement

-Need to understand what it is like for the other person

-Draws on social; cognitive and communication skills

-It can be tightly structured with the use of closed questioning.

-It can be semi-structured or open ended

Thematic Analysis is interested in what people say, the themes and reoccurring patterns in their experiences. It is the most common form of analysis in qualitative research.

[1] It emphasizes pinpointing, examining, and recording patterns (or "themes") within data

[2] Themes are patterns across data sets that are important to the description of a phenomenon and are associated to a specific research question

[3] The themes become the categories for analysis.

[4] Thematic analysis is performed through the process of coding in six phases to create established, meaningful patterns. These phases are: familiarization with data, generating initial codes, searching for themes among codes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the final report
